50/50 Friday (82): First/Last Book Read in 2017

50/50 Friday is a meme hosted by Carrie @The Butterfly Reads and I and focuses on the opposite sides of books (best/worst, differing opinions, etc).  Every week will have a new topic and several advance topics will be listed in the tab labeled 50/50 Friday!

Today's Topic: First/Last Book Read in 2017

First:

Hercule Poirot #17
Released: 1937

Blurb:
"The tranquillity of a cruise along the Nile is shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway has been shot through the head. She was young, stylish and beautiful, a girl who had everything - until she lost her life. Hercule Poirot recalls an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: 'I'd like to put my dear little pistol against her head and just press the trigger.' Yet in this exotic setting, nothing is ever quite what it seems... "

I started off the year with a series of Agatha Christie reads and this one happened to be 5 stars so I really started off the year with a bang!  I highly recommend this one.

Last:

Hercule Poirot #22
Released: 1940

Blurb:
"As Elinor Carlisle stands before the Maidensford courts pleading not guilty to murder, her eyes meet those of a total stranger - the only man who believes in her innocence: Hercule Poirot. The case has sparked the interest of the Belgian detective. So have the suspicious events that have doomed Miss Carlisle to an inescapable fate. It began with an anonymous letter, a dying aunt, a handsome inheritance... and poison. Poirot's investigation is about to draw him into the shadows of a deadly family secret, and a mystery that could save a woman's life - or end it..."

Coincidentally, I capped the year with another Agatha Christie!  I think it's because my winter break spans from the end of December to the beginning of February so I'm home during that time period where my collection of Agatha Christie books is!  I'm slowly making my way through the 50-60 books that my parents gifted to me.  This one wasn't one of my favorites (I rated it 3 stars) but I tend to have a specific preference for mysteries.  So you might like this!  It's kind of fitting though, because I failed on all the challenges I set for myself so I should end the year on a low note.  This year I'm doing better, though!

Have you read either of these?  How did you begin and end your 2017?  Make a post and link up down below!

Next Week's Topic: Best/Worst Book Read in April

  1. I love Agatha Christie novels! I haven't read every novel she's ever written yet, but would love to read them all at some point and even reread a few. I love her novel 'And There Were None'. I currently have 'Curtain', which I read decades ago and loved... So plan to reread it later on this year.

How many novels by Agatha Christie have you read so far and which ones have been your favorites?

    1. Haha that's the goal! I really started getting into her novels a couple years ago and now I think it's safe to say that I'm obsessed. Ooh Yes ATTWN is so good! The Nile is based on the same idea (a bunch of people in a confined space and someone is murdering other people) and so is Murder on the Orient and that style is by far my favorite. Oo yes Curtain is fabulous! Slightly sad because of Poirot but I loved it too.

I've read 25 of her books (she's actually my most-read author now) and I have so say my favorites are And Then There Were None, Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, Cards on the Table, The Big Four, and Cat Among the Pigeons. Evil Under the Sun is also really good! But there are so many good ones! So far I've read mostly Hercule Poirot because he's my favorite out of all the detectives Christie created but I'm hoping to finish his series next year (I have 25 books left in his series) and then move onto the other detectives.

      Thanks for stopping by, Lisa!

    2. All good choices for favorite Agatha Christie novels!

Hercule Poirot is my favoite of Christie's detectives. I find Miss Marple a bit boring.

Did you know that Hercule Poirot may have been based on a real person?? I blogged about this article almost 4 years ago now. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/may/13/hercule-poirot-real-life-model-belgian-gendarme?utm_source=Publishers+Weekly&utm_campaign=a16d697c65-UA-15906914-1&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_0bb2959cbb-a16d697c65-304523825

    3. I do as well! I've only read one of her mysteries so I'm going to definitely read them all to get a full taste of her narrative but from that one mystery I don't think I'll like her any more.

Really?? That's so cool! And how Agatha Christie played the piano where he lived?? Thanks for the article!

  2. Both Agatha Christie! That doesn't surprise me. I actually found Murder on the Orient Express at a second hand store for only $.99 so I bought it! Now I just need to read it....

  3. I like that you opened and ended the year with Agatha Christie novels. I read a number of books years ago, and keep meaning to go back and read them again plus the ones I have that I haven't yet read as well.

    1. That was actually kind of my thought process and now reading all of her books has become a bit of an obsession :) Thanks for stopping by, Wendy!

  4. Love Agatha Christie! Love the books, the adaptions both tv and movies! Really can't get enough... Hercule is my favorite of her detectives but Mousetrap is a pretty nifty mystery!

    1. I've actually only seen one of the movies and I need to remedy that ASAP! Hercule is my favorite too :) I just find the way that he solves mysteries so be so interesting and his flair for the dramatic is just so uniquely him. I don't think I've read Mousetrap yet but it's definitely on my list! Thanks for stopping by, Dani!

  7. I'm yet to read anything by Agatha Christie but I hope to get started on Murder on the Orient Express soon! I'm sorry your 2017 ended on a low note with this, but glad 2018's doing you better anyway! <3

  8. Agatha Christie books are my comfort reads <3 It's great you both started and ended last year with her books but I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the last one so much! I haven't read that book. Have you read And then There were none? It's one of my favorites :)

    1. Me too! I was actually kind of glad for it because I didn't want myself to like ALL of her books because then I would just feel like I was getting to sucked in and not staying objective. Still, though :) I have! It's actually the first AC book I ever read and I absolutely loved it! It's actually why I love Death on the Nile so much because it's kind of the same general style (everyone is in a secluded location and the murderer in one of them). It's just so cool to figure out! Thanks for stopping by, Uma!
