R&R Review Friday: The Endangered by S.L. Eaves

Goodreads Blurb:
"S&D Industries is a prominent pharmaceutical company based in New York. It has, for many years, appeared to exist only for the benefit of humanity, and this year's chief product seems no different. The company's CEO, whom we know only as Striden, announces the imminent delivery of a powerful flu vaccine. The true purposes of S&D are anything but philanthropic, however. The newly-engineered drug does not protect against flu. It turns people into werewolves.

The only group which stands a chance of resisting this change is a population of vampires. The foremost of them, who go by the name of The Endangered, are determined to turn back the mass werewolf infestation. Among them are an ambitious rebel named Catch and Lori, Catch's newly-turned protege. Catch has brought this treacherous world to Lori's doorstep and both their worlds are turned upside-down in the process. Secrets are exposed, alliances are formed. Blood is spilled as the vampires must do everything in their power to preserve both their own kind and that of their food supply.

R&R Review Monday: Sinfully Cursed by Steven Brown

Goodreads Blurb:
"Josef Kaviani is an average, everyday sort of guy.

He works a desk job at a local college, with a manager that he can’t stand; he lives in an apartment worth far less than he pays; he still has feelings for the girl who got away. Every Tuesday, he goes to his local mosque to pray; every Friday, he goes bowling with his friends.

It’s a comfortable routine, and it’s almost enough to let Josef forget the dark, savage secret that he keeps from most of the world.

Josef’s halfway-normal life is torn apart by the nightmares of a past he has been trying to escape for years, and the implications of a future he’s never wanted. Pulled between three factions, Josef will eventually have to make a life-shattering decision; a choice that will force him to face the truth of who, and what, he is.

Before his secrets get him, and everyone he loves, killed."

When Jace and Clary meet again, Clary is horrified to discover that the demon Lilith’s magic has bound her beloved Jace together with her evil brother Sebastian, and that Jace has become a servant of evil. Book Review Sunday: City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

Goodreads Blurb:
"Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City's Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation."

Review:
This was like the typical middle of a series book for me.   All full of filler and fluff and sort of boring in most places.  I did like it - don't get me wrong, but it was missing something essential.  If you know what it is, let me know because I just can't figure it out!

Let's start at the beginning shall we?  It was very slow.  I had to force myself to read each chapter.  As you might expect, that isn't a good thing.  After a bit, it picked up though which was good.  Except my troubles don't stop there.

Can I just say how incredibly frustrating it is when someone is actually trying to say something important and they never get to say it because they're being constantly cut off?  That's like the story of this book and it got in credibly annoying.

Speaking of annoying, let's chat about Jace and Clary for a second.  I really wish they (meaning everyone who's experienced) would get Clary some training.  They're all trying to shelter her and ease her into the life but when she keeps getting attacked and getting pulled into things, well you'll have to get her ready eventually.  She's just so helpless!  And Jace.  Oh goodness what happened to you?  You were perfect in City of Bones!  But in City of Ashes, you were so annoying and whiny and controlling and moody and just UGH.  You didn't have many funny one-liners either :(

WHEW.  Okay now with all that ranting out of my system, let's actually discover some good things about this book shall we?  I loved the extra spin the Inquisitor put on things with all her personal grievances and complications.  I realize she created some major problems which was bad but she really added interest to the plot and demonstrated that The Clave isn't infallible and that they are human and make horrible horrible mistakes and cost lives.  Yeah they're not looking so hot in my eyes right now.

The feels in this book were just amazing.  I felt like I was right there with the characters and when the final battle happened (not the final final battle but just the final battle) it just blew me away.  I just love the ending!  I also loved the mystery in this one.  A lot of people are keeping dangerous secrets which keeps things interesting.  Oh and Magnus is now replacing Jace in my heart!

Final Verdict:
A very exciting read once it picked up after the never ending, boring introduction.  The characters seemed to be more annoying *points at Clary and Jace* but they did add some interesting road bumps to the plotline.  So overall, not a total loss but still a filler book through and through.
3.5 stars

Quotes:
“I don't want to be a man," said Jace. "I want to be an angst-ridden teenager who can't confront his own inner demons and takes it out verbally on other people instead."
"Well," said Luke, "you're doing a fantastic job.”

“We came to see Jace. Is he alright?"
"I don't know," Magnus said. "Does he normally just lie on the floor like that without moving?”

“Well, I’m not kissing the mundane," said Jace. "I’d rather stay down here and rot."
"Forever?" said Simon. "Forever’s an awfully long time."
Jace raised his eyebrows. "I knew it," he said. "You want to kiss me, don’t you?”

“That does it," said Jace. "I'm going to get you a dictionary for Christmas this year."
"Why?" Isabelle said.
"So you can look up 'fun.' I'm not sure you know what it means.”

“I've got a stele we can use. Who wants to do me?"
"A regrettable choice of words," muttered Magnus.”

“Mom. I have something to tell you. I’m undead. Now, I know you may have some preconceived notions about the undead. I know you may not be comfortable with the idea of me being undead. But I’m here to tell you that undead are just like you and me … well, okay. Possibly more like me than you.”

“Is standing by the window muttering about blood something he does all the time?" asked Simon.
"No," Jace said. "Sometimes he sits on the couch and does it.”

“As long as there was coffee in the world, how bad could things be?”

“Hey Baby.
Baby? You're kidding me, right?
I was trying it out. No?
No.”

“If you really love something, you never try to keep it the way it is forever. You have to let it be free to change.”

Forever by Maggie Stiefvater

This whole series made me cry. Just reading what each character had to live through (or not live) was well... heartbreaking.

This is a five star series to me for many reasons but I'll just share one with you - the most important one (well to me it's important). This series was realistic. Well as realistic as you can get with werewolves.

Example 1) Sam and Grace's relationship. I love how it's mostly focused on the emotional and not so much on the physical. Granted, there's more physical stuff mentioned in this book than the other ones but there was still that balance. Also, at times, they found it hard to say things to each other. In some other books, the character can say anything to 'the one' but to me that seems a tad unrealistic.

Example 2) The plot antagonist/main problem. There is no world ending, no apocalypse, no extreme circumstances. While that's great and all, it's nice to know that some places in the world are still experiencing the basic problems of trying to keep a pack of wolves/humans alive. It's just a more manageable problem that everyday people can handle (well some people, I can't speak for everyone...)

So five stars!

Linger by Maggie Stiefvater

This whole series is just blowing my mind. SO MANY FEELS! The ending is... well I can't think of any way to describe it. It's sad, hopeful, resigned, determined, and bittersweet. It's a good thing I have the next one on hand from the library! I really don't know what to say that won't give anything away... I guess I'll just mention why I gave it 4 stars. Yes, it evoked emotions out of me but it didn't have that deeper level of thinking that I love to have in a 5 star book. Also, because I really need to start taking the rating system seriously and stop rating every book I cried while reading a 5 star review! I have to crack down no matter how much I want to give this 5 stars! I don't know how to explain it, maybe it just didn't strike the right chord for me... it was an amazing book, but for me, something kept it from being truly amazing. That's all I got.

4 stars, following my unconscious 6th sense I guess...

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Talk about tension! This entire book was full of anticipation, tension, and suspense. Sam could change back to a wolf and for good this time. And he and Grace only had a few short months together (not counting the 6 years people). The main vibe I got while reading this (besides the obvious growing tension) was hope. Hope that somehow Sam is different. That he can make himself not change like Grace did.

I decided to read this based off a couple of recommendations and finally ended up reading it for a challenge in one of my groups for February. And perfect timing too! All throughout the book, the tension is caused by the growing cold and right now where I live, it's been steadily getting colder for the past 3 days (the amount of time I needed to read this). It's been a cold winter!

So the characters. I got the feeling that Sam and Grace are a little like those tootsie pop lollipops. In the center, there's the sweet tootsie roll center and covering it in a thick layer is the sweet lollipop part. They are both old souls on the outside (and most of the inside) but somewhere, deep in there, they have youth. It was nice to see that the author included that - She could have just had them both be so hardened from their hardships that they had no youth left. However, she preserved that.

The plot was amazing. Sometimes in the middle, it seemed like I should have been bored but the growing tension throughout the book kept me immersed. And the end. What a roller coaster!

5 out of 5 stars!
