R&R Review Friday: Meritropolis by Joel Ohman

Meritropolis #1

Goodreads Blurb:
"The year is AE3, 3 years after the Event. Within the walls of Meritropolis, 50,000 inhabitants live in fear, ruled by the brutal System that assigns each citizen a merit score that dictates whether they live or die. Those with the highest scores thrive, while those with the lowest are subject to the most unforgiving punishment--to be thrust outside the city gates, thrown to the terrifying hybrid creatures that exist beyond.

But for one High Score, conforming to the System just isn't an option. Seventeen-year-old Charley has a brother to avenge. And nothing--not even a totalitarian military or dangerous science--is going to stop him.

Where humankind has pushed nature and morals to the extreme, Charley is amongst the chosen few tasked with exploring the boundaries, forcing him to look deep into his very being to discern right from wrong. But as he and his friends learn more about the frightening forces that threaten destruction both without and within the gates, Meritropolis reveals complexities they couldn't possibly have bargained for..."

Little Women Read-Along!

Okay, confession time.  I tried to read Little Women a while ago (think 5 years ago) and I just couldn't get through it.  I read the first 4 pages and put it back on my bookshelf never to be touched again.  But guess what?  I'm going to tackle it in February!  Let me tell you the whole story...

So I was browsing around on Jenni's blog Jenni Elyse and saw that on her TBR, she was hoping to read Little Women!  And she was asking for a buddy read partner!  Of course, I was ecstatic.  I mean, this book has been gathering dust on my shelf for the past 5 years and I've felt so guilty for not finishing it (that and Watership Down).  So I commented saying that I would love to be her buddy reading partner.  Well, low and behold, it turns out that a bunch of us following Jenni's blog haven't had a chance to read it yet!  So Jenni, like the totally awesome human being that she is, organized a read-along for all of us and everyone is invited!  That's right, I'm talking to you!

Here's the link to Jenni's post announcing the whole dealio: http://jennielyse.com/little-women-read-along-signup-and-schedule/

Feel free to join us - the more the merrier!

Classic novel of 19th-century family life during and after the Civil War, in a household with four sisters. Alcott based the March family largely on her own real-life family.

R&R Review Sunday: Hope With Stickers by M.L. Crum

Irony #2

Goodreads Blurb:
"Hope Scott is a stranger to herself. She has fossilized her emotions deep within to hold back the pain of being an unwanted daughter, wife, and now the most painful of all…an unwanted mother. The nine years she chose not to search for her runaway daughter has led her down a sorrowful path to the edge of her only child’s grave. Hope must now live with the fact that her child chose to take her own life over coming back home. She barely exists within the pain and has completely closed off her heart. This would have been her story had she never met Miriam Duvall one rainy September day - but meet Miriam she does.

There’s more to the story that was never told in Irony of Time. Read Hope’s story about how this chance meeting and brief friendship changes the course of her life, detouring her into a dangerous world to save her daughter. Within this unnatural world she meets the Novaks, a mysterious family of private investigators dwelling between evil and good. Fearing for her daughter’s life, Hope is forced to ask for help from the arrogant, brash cousin, Rylas Novak, who seems uncomfortably drawn to her for there is something about Hope that resonates deep within him. And there is something about Rylas that Hope desperately wants to hate, but just can’t. During their intense search, Hope quickly finds herself in one perilous situation after another. But could the most detrimental blow come when she finally opens her heart?"

R&R Review Sunday: The Vagabond Vicar by Charlotte Brentwood

Stand-Alone to date

Goodreads Blurb:
"William Brook is an idealistic young cleric, desperate to escape dreary England for a mission adventure in exotic lands. It's his worst nightmare come true when he is posted to a parish in a small backwater village, populated with small-minded people and husband-hunting mamas. He’s determined not to form any ties and to escape the country as an independent single man.

A free spirit, Cecilia Grant is perfectly content to remain in her family home in Amberley village - when she's not wandering the countryside at all hours painting. Marriage options are few, but that won't stop her mother from engineering a match with one of the ruling family's sons. Cecilia attempts to win the man, but what is it about the new vicar and his brooding ways that is so appealing? Could he be the only one who has ever really understood her, and can she discover what he is running away from?

As William struggles not to fall in love with the lady's intoxicating beauty and mysterious eccentricity, he finds himself drawn into the lives of the villagers, despite their best efforts to alienate the newcomer. When he makes it clear he's not sticking around, Cecilia strives to restrain her blossoming feelings for him. Just when it seems love may triumph, dark secrets are revealed in Amberley and a scandal from William’s past may see the end of not only his career, but his chance at finding an everlasting love.

The Vagabond Vicar is an unashamedly romantic historical novel you'll fall in love with. If you love Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer, can't get enough of Downton Abbey or Cranford, or just prefer old-fashioned boy-meets-girl stories, try reading Charlotte Brentwood.

Sensuality level: sweet (only kissing)
Please note, although there is some mention of religious subject matter due to the hero's occupation, this is not an "inspirational" novel."

Review Friday: Where She Went by Gayle Forman

If I Stay #2

Goodreads Blurb:
"It's been three years since the devastating accident . . . three years since Mia walked out of Adam's life forever.
Now living on opposite coasts, Mia is Juilliard's rising star and Adam is LA tabloid fodder, thanks to his new rock star status and celebrity girlfriend. When Adam gets stuck in New York by himself, chance brings the couple together again, for one last night. As they explore the city that has become Mia's home, Adam and Mia revisit the past and open their hearts to the future - and each other.

Told from Adam's point of view in the spare, lyrical prose that defined If I Stay, Where She Went explores the devastation of grief, the promise of new hope, and the flame of rekindled romance."

Blog Tour Review Sunday: Not the One by Amy Daws

London Lovers #4

Goodreads Blurb:
"My name is Reyna Miracle. Even though a part of my name is Miracle, there’s nothing miraculous about me. My body portrays the tales of my life. Every feeling, every heartbreak, every emotion. Marked. Inked. Stained. A walking canvas of my messed up truth. But there’s one confession I can’t put in a tattoo. A confession that will kill me to tell, but my best friend died before I had the chance. Now I’m left with him. The only one who can hold me in the night and squeeze that spot on my neck that feels like my lifeline between sanity and chaos. But we don’t work together. We’re absolute poison for each other. We’re a stifling, suffocating, sickness of darkness. But I feel safe...because I’ve made an art of pushing people away. Now he’s pushing back… And making me believe... Making me wonder... Maybe, just maybe... I could be the one."

Excerpt
The sound of churning gravel and the purr of a car engine drew Sky’s attention to the road. A silver Jag slowed to a stop in front of Gran’s. His heart clutched in his chest, air stilled in his lungs. Katie. He didn’t need to see the shimmer of her glossy auburn hair reflecting in the setting sun to recognize her. The blistering pull of every cell in his body and the rush of conflicting emotions rolling through him were proof enough. Anger, desire, sadness, and rejection brought with them a sting that burned the backs of his eyes. Forcing down the lump of emotion clogging his throat, Sky tried to tamp down the familiar vibration humming through his body. A part of him wanted to whoop for joy before yanking Katie into his arms kissing her senseless. Another part of him wanted to forget she even existed…wipe away the ball- churning memories that flooded his brain, and focus on the hurt and anger he felt when Gran broke the news, Katie had left. Yet, all he could think about was touching her, kissing her, holding her in his arms, before he dragged her beneath him. Skimming a cursory glance over the ridiculously expensive sports car, Sky’s shoulders sagged. Katie had achieved her dreams all right, it was staring him in the face, sending feelings of inadequacy deep into his bones. He hadn’t had a damn thing to offer her at eighteen; he sure as hell didn’t now. Sky couldn’t compete with the riches she’d apparently become accustomed to. It didn’t take a genius to see he could only rate as a long lost lover. Reality stung, like a slap to the face. Katie had ripped his heart out and stomped it to shit—a fact he’d do well to remember. But it didn’t erase the desire to love her again, or the growing need inside his jeans. Disgusted by his traitorous libido, her return only served to make him pick at the scabs of the past, and douse them in salt water. Sky clenched his jaw. “Looks like you got everything you wanted, Katie,” he mumbled with disdain. “I’m sure you’re happy now.” No sooner had the words rolled off his tongue than the sounds of gut-wrenching sobs filled his ears. What the hell? Tossing down the shovel, Sky mopped the sweat off his face before storming toward the Jag. Katie’s sobs grew louder and more pitiful. Like fine crystal, the flimsy barrier he’d erected around his heart, began to crack, splinter, and finally shatter. Standing next to the open window, Sky watched tears drip from beneath her shroud of silky, red hair. The waning sun reflected in each drop, casting them in a shimmer of gold, as they spilled onto Katie’s lap. His guts and heart clenched in tandem. Sky had only seen Katie cry once: the first time they made love; those had been tears of joy. There wasn’t an ounce of happiness in the guttural sobs ringing in his ears. What the hell had happened to her? This wasn’t the strong, resilient woman he’d once loved. Seeing Katie in the throes of such brutal sorrow gutted him. In an instant, his heart caught fire with the need to protect: burning away the poisonous animosity he’d felt moments ago. Instantly, flames of love reignited—the powerful kind they’d once shared—and Sky only wanted to scoop her into his arms so he could comfort and slay the demons causing her this pain.
