Review Tuesday: Carrie by Stephen King

Stand alone to date

Goodreads Blurb:
"Carrie knew she should not use the terrifying power she possessed... But one night at her senior prom, Carrie was scorned and humiliated just one time too many, and in a fit of uncontrollable fury she turned her clandestine game into a weapon of horror and destruction..."

Review:
Quite honestly, this book wasn't scary at all to me - just really sad.  Not the bawling kind of sad but the sadness that makes you disappointed in humanity.  Even though this is made up, it isn't hard to image this happening (perhaps without the supernatural elements).

I also felt like the entire book was very disjointed.  It would jump from Carrie's perspective to her mother's to an article really unpredictably so just as I was getting used to reading in Carrie's perspective, it would switch!  And maybe that was to make you feel unsettled but all it did to me was annoy me.  It was just a frustrating book to read because of that.  I could never really get a good grasp on Carrie or her mother's mind set so I could understand exactly what was going on.

I did really like the articles that were included and I do think they added a little extra omph - having that outside opinion.

There was also a real lack of background.  Yes, there were the facts and everything that was stated but you don't get to see much before the big event goes down so I couldn't 'feel' Carrie's rage at the end.  It was just 'oh there's the thing that he was talking about'.

The end also seemed to drag on forever.  It was interesting, yes, but everything in the book was leading up to finding out what happened at the school and once you know, there's just more and more and more and more scenes in Carrie's perspective that dragged on and on and on.

I have to say, Carrie's mother was the only disturbing aspect for me.  Except it was disturbing in the way that you think of it actually happening to other people and other children.  She was unpredictable and that helped her character building out a lot.

The Final Verdict:
While I did get through this book, I just couldn't enjoy this book.  Carrie's mother was about the only part that was slightly interesting.  The concept was intriguing but other than that, the organization made it hard to delve in and there was a lack of real background.

Quotes:
“People don't get better, they just get smarter. When you get smarter you don't stop pulling the wings off flies, you just think of better reasons for doing it.”

“But sorry is the Kool-Aid of human emotions. [...] True sorrow is as rare as true love.”

“Jesus watches from the wall,
But his face is cold as stone,
And if he loves me
As she tells me
Why do I feel so all alone?”

“She did not know if her gift came from the lord of light or of darkness, and now, finally finding that she didn't care which, she wad overcome with almost indescribable relief, as if a huge weight, long carried, had slipped from her shoulders.”

“And then the world exploded.”

  1. This isn't one of Stephen King's I'd aspire to read in the first place because I already know the story and I thought it would be sad even prior to you reviewing it as such. I'm sorry this one was disappointing to you (and not scary, even). Who wants to read a Stephen King book that isn't scary???
    Great review, Laura!

    1. Yeah... I'm not sorry that I read it, just that it didn't live up to expectations at all. It just made me really sad! Right?! At least all of his other books that I've read have been slightly creepy at the very minimum. Thanks for stopping by!
