"In Mary's world there are simple truths. The Sisterhood always knows best. The Guardians will protect and serve. The Unconsecrated will never relent. And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth. But, slowly, Mary’s truths are failing her. She’s learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power, and about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness. When the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, she must choose between her village and her future—between the one she loves and the one who loves her. And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Could there be life outside a world surrounded by so much death?"
So full disclosure: I really wanted to put It by Stephen King in this category but I haven't finished it yet (I'm about halfway through) so I thought that would be slightly unfair. The Forest of Hands and Teeth is really good, though as well. I read it when I was first getting into YA and while it isn't specifically scary, it's got a good amount of horror in it and it's full of scares. This series is one of my favorite rereads during the Halloween season!

"Carrie knew she should not use the terrifying power she possessed... But one night at her senior prom, Carrie was scorned and humiliated just one time too many, and in a fit of uncontrollable fury she turned her clandestine game into a weapon of horror and destruction..."
I just really couldn't get into this one. There kept being these horror scenes and I know that I was supposed to feel freaked out but I just felt sad. Carrie could have been such an amazing person and she was stifled in her youth. I also felt like it was very disjointed, and not in the good sort of way. It jumps around a lot and just as I was settling in, it would go to another perspective which irritated me more than throwing me off balance like it think it was meant to. Overall, just a miss for me.

Next Week's Topic: Best/Worst Book Read in October
I don’t consider Stephen King’s stuff to really be horror. They can be scary though. I loved IT. Glad you’re enjoying. Carrie has always been a sadder story. I agree it’s more sad than scary.
ReplyDeleteI'd agree with you there. I'm just not a big horror person in general because I always find them really funny for some reason. Thanks for stopping by, Jenny!
DeleteI've never read Carrie and that's sad. I should read the book I was named after.
ReplyDeleteWere you actually named after the book? That's so cool!! But seriously though, I think you'd like it better than I did; horror just never seems to work out for me. Thanks for stopping by, Carrie!
DeleteYes, The Forest of Hands and Teeth was excellent - I read it on audio and the production was fantastic. :)
ReplyDeleteRight?? It's such a different kind of story :) I'm glad to hear the audio version was just as good; I tend to avoid audiobooks because it seems like if the narrator doesn't quite fit or the production isn't good, it ruins the book. Thanks for stopping by, Lauren!
