50/50 Friday (91): Favorite/Least Favorite Genre

50/50 Friday is a meme hosted by Carrie @The Butterfly Reads and I and focuses on the opposite sides of books (best/worst, differing opinions, etc).  Every week will have a new topic and several advance topics will be listed in the tab labeled 50/50 Friday!

Fantasy

Fantasy is just so amazing!  One of the many reasons I read is because I can't stand the real world at the moment so I escape into another one.  I wouldn't actually want to live in any of these worlds but in these made up lands, the main characters slay dragons which inspires me to slay my own (even if those dragons take on the form of student loan payments or difficult people at work).  Also, fantasy worlds are just so beautiful.  They're designed by humans, after all, so they kind of represent an idealized world where even if the society is less than perfect, the new creatures and landscapes are gorgeous and are sculpted to entice your imagination.

Last year, 34% of the books I read were fantasy which is the majority.  The next closest are science fiction and mystery which are tied at 16% followed by historical fiction at 10.6%.  This year so far, 35.1% are fantasy with mystery coming in second at 18.2%.

I've listed some of my favorite fantasy books below:

And many more!  See a more complete list HERE and my Goodreads shelf HERE.

Horror

This is a genre I've just never been able to get into.  I've only read a few novels that I would classify as 'horror' and I just couldn't do it.  Not because they were too scary, but because they weren't really and that made it kind of ridiculous.  The thing is, I can't really be scared by books.  For me, books are a little more removed than movies are.  So for example, I decided I'm going to read It by Stephen King but not watch the movie because seeing the scenes that I read about would terrify me.  Also, horror movies are just kind of gross as well.  I don't mind blood and gore, but when it gets excessive, I just can't anymore.  But when there's blood and gore in a book, I just find myself getting more and more removed and not enjoying it.

Last year, I read 3 horrors books (3.2%).  I didn't read any non-fiction (but that was just circumstance; I love reading non-fiction if it's about a topic I'm interested in) and I read 2 classics (2.1%).  I just don't really get around to reading classics that often and honestly, the classification 'classic' is a little vague so I often classify books in other genres so that isn't really representative.  This year so far, I haven't finished any horror books (I'm in the middle of It and slowly slogging through it).  I also haven't read any 'classics' and I've only read 2 historical fiction (which I need to remedy because I love that genre!).

I've listed the few horror books I've read below that I enjoyed more than the average:

  1. I'm the opposite! I love anything and everything horror. Though Fantasy isn't my least favorite it's not my favorite either.

    1. Really? Do you have any favorites? Maybe I've just been reading the wrong books from the genre! Thanks for stopping by, Ash :)

  2. The horror genre is very hot or miss (mostly miss) for me. It doesn't rank high on my list of genres to read either, but every once in a while I do read something from the horror genre.

    1. Yeah, I've found it to be that way as well. Once in a while, there will be a book that is all right but mostly I stay away because I tend to not enjoy them. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I’ve been having a hard time with fantasy lately. I hope it doesn’t last. I loved IT. I hope you finish it so I can hear your thoughts.

    1. Really? That's so awful. I've been having the same sort of thing happen with contemporaries. I just can't stand them right now. Haha you and me both! Thanks for stopping by, Jenny!

  4. I actually dislike both horror and fantasy! I took a horror literature class last year and just found the books to be too complicated. I also scare very easily. As for fantasy, I often find myself bored, especially during high fantasy novels.

    1. That sounds like a really interesting class, though! Discussing the ins and outs of horror. Still, I also scare easily (hence the 'no scary movies' thing) but for some reason, with books it's different. Aw that sucks but I totally get what you're saying. If I hadn't watched the LOTR movies first, I don't think I would have been able to finish the books. Thanks for stopping by, Emily!

  5. I find quite a lot of horror to be just too graphic for squeamish old me!

    1. Really? I find gore in books to be slightly more palatable but I definitely agree with you in terms of movies. With the normal amount of gore, I'm fine with it but in horror movies, I'm constantly saying 'ewwwwwww' and covering my eyes. Thanks for stopping by, Stephanie!

  6. Agree with you 100% ♥️ Love fantasy, urban fantasy and all that applies! Horror just not my thing, not even movies! Too much of an imagination!
