Top Ten Tuesday (3)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish.  Every week, The Broke and Bookish post a new topic that that week's top ten lists are based on!  This week's topic is Top Ten books I'd give to readers who have never read X (pick any genre).

I've decided to do Fantasy!  So let's get started shall we?

The Bloodlines series by Richelle Mead is just fantastic.  I just finished the 5th book Silver Shadows last night and loved it (review to come).  I suppose it is more about vampires and paranormal but it still applies to fantasy as well!

The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead is the companion series to the Bloodlines series.  If you're going to tackle this whole world that Richelle Mead created, I recommend starting with reading this series first and then Bloodlines.

The Iron King series by Julie Kagawa is everything you could want in a fantasy series.  It includes everything but does mostly focus on the fey.  I've reread this series so many times I've lost count!

I've only read the first book (Hush, hush) in the Hush, Hush series but I absolutely loved it and it covered the whole angels and demons topic.

I've read the first two books in The Mortal Instruments series (City of Bones and City of Ashes) which were both very good.  I finished City of Ashes as well last night and although it wasn't as good as the first book in my opinion, it is an excellent fantasy series.

If you have the patience and have a love for high fantasy, The Lord of the Rings series is an excellent choice.  It was long but worth it.  I actually watched the movies first which helped me get through the books.  I've read The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Hobbit.  The other book is currently on hold.

The Inheritance Cycle series is another great series for lovers of high and/or epic fantasy.  They are incredibly long books but the pages just flew by for me.  I finished the series a while ago and have yet to publish my review for the series in its entirety.

The Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi is pretty much the love of my life.  I loved every book (it's a trilogy with 2 novellas).  It takes place in a dystopian world.

The Masque of the Red Death series is sort of a combo between fantasy, historical fiction, and steampunk.  It's about the red death in a more obscure sense... if you read it you'll get what I mean.

Ah the Sweet Trilogy by Wendy Higgins (she's actually working on a fourth companion book called Sweet Temptation that's due to be released in 2015).  This series is the perfect combo between fantasy and romance.

Have you read any of these books?  What did you think of them?

  1. The Masque of the Red Death series sound really intriguing!! I'll have to add it to my reading wishlist. Thanks for the tip! Please check out my TTT post this week at the following link: http://captivatedreader.blogspot.com/2014/08/top-ten-tuesday-top-ten-books-id-give.html

  2. Amazing list! :) I absolutely love Vampire Academy and Bloodlines, I read both The Fiery Heart and Silver Shadows the day Silver Shadows came out because before that I just wasn't ready to read the ending of Fiery Heart. Yes, I already know how it will end but knowing it and reading it is two different things, so do not question my logic. lol (after this my mum thinks I'm crazier than she ever thought lol). But back to your list. I plan to read Masque of the Red Death and Sweet Evil, but I'm hesitant about Shatter Me because I think there's a love triangle in it? I'm not sure about this but I think I read it somewhere.

    1. Thanks! I wish I would have done that - I wasn't prepared AT ALL for that ending! At least the ending of Silver Shadows was as bad (it's still pretty bad though). Lol I agree with you! If someone had just TOLD me, I wouldn't have read it until Silver Shadows came out but noooo of course not. I hope you like them! If you hate love triangles, I would suggest not reading the trilogy. The love triangle isn't the main focus but it's still really important. The whole series is generally about the main characters growth and the love triangle plays a big role in it. I'll go check it out!

  3. I also chose fantasy. I almost put LotR on my list but I decided against it because so many people are scared of his books and I want to ease them into fantasy, lol. But, I do agree that Tolkien is awesome!!!

  5. Hey Laura ;D I've read over half of these! I'm yet to read Hush Hush, Shatter Me, Masque of the Red Death, and Sweet Evil :)
I'm not sure I want to read Hush Hush tho, since I've heard some bad reviews about it......is it true that the MC is weak? Because I honestly can't stand weak protagonists e.g. Bella Swan XD

    1. Get on that girl! :D In the beginning, it's cringe-worthy how weak she is. She gets a bit better throughout but still nowhere near I'd like her to be which is what I hope is what will happen in the rest of the series. Maybe it'll be like a slow version of Shatter Me where she has to find herself and her strength. I couldn't stand the New Moon Bella! My favorite was Breaking Dawn just because she finally had at least a little inner strength. I thought she was okay in Twilight and waaaay too whiny in Eclipse. What say you?

    2. Yes sir *salutes* ;) Cringe-worthy XD Oh well I'll probably read Hush Hush eventually, it's just not on the top of my ever growing extraordinarily humongous to-read pile :P
Ikr? Oh gods XD New Moon Bella was horrendous! *makes a face* I hardly remember the books anymore, but the thing that always stuck in my head is how depressingly dumb and suicidally-missing-Edward she was *resists to urge to strangle Bella* ^^ I can't believe I have to share my name with her *mock wails* XDD

    3. Haha pushed to the back of the line!
Ugh yes! How she would hallucinate and everything *shudders* horrible. But because you're so awesome, everyone will forget about her! XD
