50/50 Friday (65): Favorite/Least Favorite Christmas/Winter-Related Trope

50/50 Friday is a meme hosted by Carrie @The Butterfly Reads and I and focuses on the opposite sides of books (best/worst, differing opinions, etc).  Every week will have a new topic and several advance topics will be listed in the tab labeled 50/50 Friday!

Today's Topic: Favorite/Least Favorite Christmas/Winter-Related Trope

Favorite:
As we established in the last 50/50 Friday, I don't read all that many books that are set during winter time (or Christmas) so I honestly have basically no experience in this.  However, I have read a couple and there are a few tropes I've noticed.

Snow.  Everywhere.  All the time.

One thing I noticed while reading my very few winter related books, is that there's always snow.  I live in the upper Midwest of the US which means we get a LOT of snow all winter long (snowfall of two feet (about 2/3rds of a meter) is totally normal) so for me, this is completely relatable.  However, there are places like Florida that don't get snow during the winter!  Why is it that winter is only winter (and Christmas is only Christmas) with snow?  Even though this is obviously an unfair trope, I love having snow everywhere and, to me, winter isn't complete without snow!  You can't tell me that it's the winter season while it's still brown and green everywhere.  It's horribly unfair to anyone that lives closer to the equator but I can't help but love it.

Love.  Everywhere.  All the time.

This trope does annoy me.  It seems like winter is the perfect time for everyone to fall in love and the only thing that happens during winter is matchmaking!  This is at least true of all of the books and movies I've seen.  What I would love to see is everyone coming home for Christmas (or another holiday) and a new friendship is formed!  Awesome friendships are almost better than romances!  This also applies broadly to the entire YA (and to some extent, Adult and MG) genre.

What do you think of these tropes?  Have you heard of other tropes that you like/don't like?  Make a post and link up down below!

Next Week's Topic: Best/Worst Book Read in December

  1. It's interesting that you bring up snow! Now that you mention it, I think every Christmas themed book I've read has taken place in the snow (the "snowed in" trope is quite popular!) however I live in an area where there's no snow at all (our winter is about 60 degrees) and I've never thought to seek out a warmer-weather Christmas book! (Honestly, I'm not even sure if there are any!)

    1. Right? I didn't think about it until I was scrolling through the books I have read that took place during winter. It seems kind of unfair to me! Of course, like Florida, some places don't have the typical four seasons (wet and dry for example) and maybe winter is just characterized by cold temperatures and snow. I don't really know. Thanks for stopping by, Cristina!

  2. One christmassy book I read in December, Heart Note by Cassandra O'Leary, was set in Australia. It was refreshing to read about a summery Christmas with the problem being too much heat, not too much snow. There was a lot of falling in love though!

    1. A winter book with warm weather? Count me in! That's definitely going on my TBR! Thanks for the recommendation and for stopping by, Stephanie!

  3. Yeah, having grown up with snow in the winter I can’t imagine Christmas and winter without it. I’m sick of all the Christmas movies being about romance. Come on!

    1. Me either! I could never live in the South where getting snow is an anomaly... Me too! Maybe the feeling is more potent because I had been watching lots of Hallmark movies but it really irritates me. Thanks for stopping by, Jenny!
