This is one of the few books I've read about time travel so maybe it's just my inexperience with the genre. I just felt as thought everything was murky. You know how in Throne of Glass, Celaena kept her past a secret and we don't find out much about it until the third book Heir of Fire? This was like that but there were little hints about Ian's past that are never fully brought to light. And because this is a stand-along, that was kind of annoying to me. Ian was just a bit too abstract for me.
I did really enjoy reading about Miriam's journey as she tries to fix what went wrong in her life. It's truly heart-breaking once you finally get the whole story of Miriam and what she's been through.
This was a quite absorbing book. Every new plot twist kept me wondering how Miriam and Ian would react and how it would influence the future.
The ending was incredibly satisfying. Even if you never get the full picture of what exactly Ian's backstory is, it all wraps up very nicely and has that 'probably happily ever after' feel.
The Final Verdict:
Ian is a little too murky although the plotline and Miriam were incredibly fascinating! The ending was everything I could hope for!
