50/50 Friday is a meme hosted by Carrie @The Butterfly Reads and I and focuses on the opposite sides of books (best/worst, differing opinions, etc). Every week will have a new topic and several advance topics will be listed in the tab labeled 50/50 Friday!
Today's Topic: Best/Worst Book an Author Has Published
I chose to look at Kiera Cass' books for this prompt (just randomly picking an author off of my most-read author list)! She's written some awesome books but there were a couple that missed the mark for me.
The Best
Stand-alone
Goodreads Blurb:
""You must never do anything that might expose our secret. This means that, in general, you cannot form close bonds with humans. You can speak to us, and you can always commune with the Ocean, but you are deadly to humans. You are, essentially, a weapon. A very beautiful weapon. I won't lie to you, it can be a lonely existence, but once you are done, you get to live. All you have to give, for now, is obedience and time..."
The same speech has been given hundreds of times to hundreds of beautiful girls who enter the sisterhood of sirens. Kahlen has lived by these rules for years now, patiently waiting for the life she can call her own. But when Akinli, a human, enters her world, she can't bring herself to live by the rules anymore. Suddenly the life she's been waiting for doesn't seem nearly as important as the one she's living now."
I read this book a little while ago and loved it! It really pulls at your heartstrings and the story and imagery are beautiful. This was Kiera Cass' first published novel and I love it so much! If you haven't read it, I recommend you give it a try.
The Worst
Selection #2
Goodreads Blurb:
"The Selection began with thirty-five girls.
Now with the group narrowed down to the six Elite, the competition to win Prince Maxon's heart is fiercer than ever—and America is still struggling to decide where her heart truly lies. Is it with Maxon, who could make her life a fairy tale? Or with her first love, Aspen?
America is desperate for more time. But the rest of the Elite know exactly what they want—and America's chance to choose is about to slip away."

This book really missed the mark for me. I really liked the first book of the series but it was just dragged out into this book. The series definitely could have been a duology in my opinion (or the author should have expanded on the rebel situation a little earlier).
Do you agree with my picks? What's your opinion? Make a post and link it below!
Next Week's Topic: Best/Worst world an author has created
I haven't read any of hers yet... But The Selection doesn't really sound like my kind of thing.
ReplyDeleteYeah that book is an either love or hate book. It's really centered around romance. Perhaps you'd like The Siren. It's still focused on romance, but it has other elements too.
DeleteSad. I've never even heard of The Siren. I wasn't a fan of The Selection so it's nice to know that she has more books to choose from.
ReplyDeleteShe does! I hadn't heard of it either until I was browsing around her Goodreads page. I'm not sure if she's writing anything new so so far, it's the only other book other than the Selection series (and it's companions).
DeleteOh wow, I'm so glad to see you enjoyed The Siren so much, Laura! I've had it on my TBR ever since I first came across it, but somehow never felt like picking it up. I will now, though- thanks to you! Personally I feel The One was the author's worst to date- I hated how things turned out in it! The Elite was comparatively VERY good imo :D
ReplyDeleteI did! Partly because I'm so glad the author chose the write length of the story in keeping it to a stand alone. The One definitely wasn't my favorite either (I only really LOVED The Selection) but the introduction of more of the rebels really saved it for me compared to The Elite where they're not at all present and there's no distraction from the romance.
DeleteI've still never read The Siren and I've heard it's so good! I'm going to have to just bite the bullet and get it! And I have to agree... The Elite was awful compared to the rest of the Selection series.
ReplyDeleteCarrie @The Butterfly Reader
It is really good (especially compared to the last bit of The Selection series)! I hope you enjoy it :)
