Review Wednesday: Red Glass by Laura Resau

Stand-alone to date

Goodreads Blurb:
"ONE NIGHT SOPHIE and her parents are called to a hospital where Pedro, 6-year-old Mexican boy, is recovering from dehydration. Crossing the border into Arizona with a group of Mexicans and a coyote, or guide, Pedro and his parents faced such harsh conditions that the boy is the only survivor. Pedro comes to live with Sophie, her parents, and Sophie's Aunt Dika, a refugee of the war in Bosnia. Sophie loves Pedro - her Principito, or Little Prince. But after a year, Pedro's surviving family in Mexico makes contact, and Sophie, Dika, Dika's new boyfriend, and his son must travel with Pedro to his hometown so that he can make a heartwrenching decision."

Review:
This is such a good, solid book.  It's very well rounded and is proficient in pretty much everything.  But not extraordinary which is why it isn't 5 stars for me.  I don't think I'd ever seek to reread this book even though it was really good.

I did finish it in one sitting.  The flow of the book is great and there are never boring parts.  If there isn't any action going on, we're learning more about Sophie, Pedro, Angel, and all the rest of the characters.  It's not like they're overly complex or developed, it's just that you get to know them like you would any other person you talk to on a daily basis. They're just very... real characters.

The best part of this book for me was definitely the journey that Sophie (and Angel) go on.  It's Sophie's first time venturing out into the world and facing her fears.  She goes on the physical journey as well as a journey of the soul.  She learns more about herself and what she wants to be and what she can be.

I also really loved the connections to the glass.  As you can probably tell from the title, red glass plays a very pivotal role in the book and it symbolizes the most important things.

Let's just take a moment to enjoy the cover while we're talking about it!  It perfectly embodies the book and represents everything that happens!  I just love covers like that and I'm so happy that the author chose that particular cover.

The Final Verdict:
This is such a good book about changing into someone you were meant to be and facing your fears.  I really liked the characters as well - they were really different and developed.
4 stars
